Iceland — Northern Lights

Itinerary

Day 1 - The adventure in search of the Northern Lights begins

Departure from Vienna and arrival in Keflavík. Accommodation in Reykjavík and a first introduction to this Nordic city.

REYKJAVÍK (“Smoky Bay”) – a tour of Iceland’s calm capital city. Enjoy views from Hallgrímskirkja Church, stroll along Laugavegur, the city’s oldest shopping street, and visit the Harpa Concert Hall.

The REYKJANES Peninsula and the option to bathe in the Blue Lagoon.

Day 2 - The Golden Circle

THE GOLDEN ICELANDIC CIRCLE:

ALMANNAGJÁ — a continental rift that forms part of Þingvellir, Iceland’s oldest national park. It is one of the few places in the world where the boundary between two continental plates can be seen above sea level. The world’s first democratic parliament convened here as early as 930.

GULLFOSS WATERFALL (“Golden Waterfall”) is one of Iceland’s best-known and most beautiful waterfalls. On the Hvíta River, which originates from the Langjökull glacier, it forms two immense cascades. It is among the country’s most visited attractions.

STROKKUR GEYSER is currently Iceland’s only active geyser. It erupts approximately every 10 minutes, shooting hot water up to 40 metres (131 feet) into the air. It is located near the Geysir hot spring, from which all geysers around the world got their name.

Day 3 - Icelandic Waterfalls

Departure from Reykjavík and the option to visit the interactive Lava Centre. Stops at SELJALANDSFOSS and SKÓGAFOSS waterfalls, which are said to be guarded by stone trolls. Opportunity for an easy hike through the scenic landscape around the waterfalls.

If we are lucky, we will also see the EYJAFJALLAJÖKULL volcano. A walk along the iconic black-sand beach of REYNISFJARA, as well as views from the lookout point on the DYRHÓLAEY cliffs.

In the late afternoon, visit VÍK, Iceland’s southernmost village, with its iconic church.

Day 4 - Glacial lagoon, Diamond Beach…

FJAÐRÁRGLJÚFUR CANYON, carved by the Fjaðrá River, offers not only incredible views but also the opportunity for an easy hike.

JÖKULSÁRLÓN — a glacial lagoon roughly 250 metres deep, renowned for its enormous floating icebergs. They slowly drift toward the lagoon’s outlet and eventually reach the Atlantic Ocean at the beach known as DIAMOND BEACH. On the dark sand, the polished chunks of ice create a unique visual effect.

Day 5 - Game of Thrones

DETTIFOSS — an imposing waterfall that plunges 44 metres (144 feet) over a width of 100 metres (328 feet), making it Iceland’s most powerful waterfall.

HVERIR – návšteva geotermálnej oblasti s horúcim bublajúcim blatom, fumarolmi a charakteristickým sírovým zápachom. Pohľad do krátera VÍTI (Peklo), ktorý vznikol po erupcií v roku 1724 a odvtedy je jeho dno vyplnené jazerom.

GRJÓTAGJÁ CAVE, near Lake Mývatn, is known for its geothermal spring. The water inside the cave ranges from 40°C to 50°C (104°F–122°F). It gained international attention for its “role” in the television series Game of Thrones.

Day 6 - Mesto veľrýb

HÚSAVÍK — a town near the Arctic Circle, often referred to as Iceland’s “whale-watching capital.” It is a pleasant stop in a coastal town, with the option to visit the Whale Museum or take a whale-watching boat tour.

GOÐAFOSS (“Waterfall of the Gods”) — located on the Skjálfandafljót River, it rightfully ranks among Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls.

AKUREYRI — Iceland’s second-largest city and the capital of the north. It lies on the shore of Eyjafjörður Fjord, about 100 kilometres (62 miles) southeast of the Arctic Circle.

Day 7 - Journey to the Centre of the Earth

SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA — known as “Iceland in miniature.” Stops include the country’s most photographed mountain, Kirkjufell; the Snæfellsjökull volcano, which inspired Jules Verne’s novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth; as well as picturesque fishing villages and dramatic coastal cliffs.

Evening arrival in Reykjavík.

Day 8 - From Iceland, Back Home

Iceland has a visa-free regime.

A trip around Iceland is ideal for anyone who enjoys adventure and Nordic landscapes. With the exception of Reykjavík and Akureyri—the country’s two largest cities—the entire itinerary is devoted to nature. Those who love dramatic fjords, countless waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, and hot springs will find plenty to enjoy on this journey.
We organize the trip in March, outside the main tourist season, when there is a greater chance of seeing the Northern Lights (aurora borealis). However, sightings cannot be guaranteed, as they depend on current weather conditions. Despite Iceland’s rugged northern wilderness, the trip can be completed in relative comfort. Infrastructure is of a high standard throughout the route, and we will travel the entire way in our own rental cars, meaning there are no limits on, for example, the number of photo stops. We cannot avoid some unpaved-road sections in the north of the island and on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, but any discomfort from the drive is rewarded with magnificent scenery in Iceland’s wilderness. You can choose the difficulty of individual hikes according to your fitness level, the weather, and your preferences. Alternatively, you can shorten them or skip them entirely without disrupting the rest of the itinerary. Anyone who does not mind a few longer drives will enjoy an easy yet truly unique journey.

We organize this trip in cooperation with our friends at SATIPO Travel Agency.
