South Sudan & Uganda — tribes and safari

Flight to Juba, the capital of South Sudan.

Arrive at an exotic airport that will stay with you for a long time. Juba is a city founded in 1922 and was never designed to be the country’s capital. After arrival, we will exchange money—be warned that cash here is counted more in plastic bags than in wallets—then take a city tour. We will visit the local market, the main street, and other corners of the city.
In the late afternoon, we will head to the White Nile, where we will taste local specialties.

Today, the adventure we came here for begins. We will load tents, sleeping mats, food, water, and everything else needed for a stay in the wilderness into off-road vehicles and head north to visit the Dinka people.
The paved road ends after about 37 miles. Along the way, we will stop for lunch in a town that will make Juba feel like an architectural metropolis.
In the late afternoon, we arrive among the Dinka people—in a place completely outside the usual tourist circuit. That is exactly why a local guide will travel with us, gradually introducing us to the life of a community that we will become part of for a while.

The Dinka are among the largest ethnic groups in South Sudan and are inseparably connected to the Nile River and its vast wetlands. For centuries, their lives have revolved around cattle—cows are symbols of wealth, beauty, and social status. Each animal has its own name, personality, and often its own song.
Men are known for their tall, slender build and traditional forehead scars that mark the transition into adulthood. Women wear simple yet striking clothing and elaborate beadwork. Society is deeply traditional, based on family ties, respect for ancestors, and a strong spiritual connection with nature.

Before the herds of cattle head out to graze, we will immerse ourselves in the Dinka people’s morning rituals. Why do some men wash their hair with cow urine? Why are the Dinka so tall? And how many cows is a woman “worth”?
In addition to unique photographs, authentic conversations and direct encounters with local people await you.

In the afternoon, we will travel to the Mundari tribe.

The Mundari people live in central South Sudan, mainly in the savannas and grazing lands around the Nile River. Here, too, cattle are at the center of the world—cows are not just a source of livelihood, but sacred beings that set the rhythm of life for the entire community. The Mundari apply ash from cow dung to their bodies for protection from the sun and insects, creating their iconic, almost sculptural appearance.
The Mundari are known for their evening rituals around fires, where smoke, singing, and the slow movements of herders mingle among the cattle. Their society is tightly organized, with an emphasis on age groups and collective responsibility.

For travelers and photographers, an encounter with the Mundari is among the most powerful experiences in Africa.

In the morning, we will continue to explore the life of the Mundari people. In the afternoon, we will travel back to Juba, where we will freshen up at the hotel.
Just as Juba may have seemed chaotic and incomprehensible at the beginning, you will now see it in a completely different way. How? You’ll see.

A 4–5-hour drive to the border with Uganda awaits us. Traveling through the savannas, grazing lands, and sparsely populated areas of South Sudan, we reach a border crossing used by very few tourists.
After a quick border crossing, we find ourselves in a completely different world. This is followed by an approximately 3-hour drive to Murchison Falls National Park—the oldest and largest park in Uganda.

In the morning, we will go on a classic African safari in an area that still sees fewer tourists, ensuring a more authentic experience. Lions, giraffes, hippos, leopards, buffaloes, and dozens of bird species await.
We will also visit Uganda’s largest and most beautiful waterfalls—Murchison Falls.

A full-day tour of Kampala. We will visit the country’s largest mosque, a local market, the royal palace, and an infamous site associated with dictator Idi Amin, who called himself “the last king of Scotland” and imprisoned his opponents there.
