That’s why we’ll focus on the early history and the monuments of this region.

Day 1: On this day we recommend exploring the little-known monuments around Nitra that reflect the cultural heritage of historic Slovakia.

The Church of St. George (Kostoľany pod Tribečom) is the third-oldest surviving pre-Romanesque architectural monument in Slovakia, dating from the 11th century. Probably the most significant part are the Romanesque and Gothic wall paintings.

Right next to Kostoľany are the ruins of Gýmeš Castle from the 13th century, the main landmark of the surrounding area. Interestingly, it’s one of the few castles in Slovakia where construction work was still going on in the 18th century.

Topoľčianky Manor was once the summer residence of the Habsburgs, and after the First World War it also served as a presidential retreat. The first Czechoslovak president, T. G. Masaryk, was very fond of relaxing here.

In the area around Nitra you’ll find many early Christian monuments.

We recommend spending the evening in Nitra.

Day 2: The next day, a drive of about 90 kilometers to Štúrovo, home to the Vadaš thermal water park.

The thermal water park covers an area of 25 hectares on the left bank of the Danube, with views of the Esztergom Basilica in Hungary. The complex itself has 9 pools with water temperatures from 26 to 36 °C, 6 water slides, plenty of attractions, a hotel, a restaurant and other places to eat.

Those who are especially active should head over to Hungary in the evening to see the Esztergom Basilica.

Day 3: Do you know where Slovakia’s largest fortress is? In Komárno, of course. It is the oldest structure of the anti-Turkish fortification. It was built at the confluence of the Váh and the Danube to the plans of the Italian fortification architect Pietro Ferrabosco. The site was left in relatively poor condition by the presence of Soviet troops between 1968 and 1991. The town of Komárno puts part of the admission fee toward repairing this historic site, which is of worldwide significance.

You’ll find all the information about visiting and the conditions on the official website here.

You’ll find all the information about visiting and the conditions on the official website here.

Cities – Nitra, Topoľčany, Zlaté Moravce, Komárno, Nové Zámky, Levice and Šaľa

Rock dwellings in Brhlovce

Nitra Region — advice, tips and itinerary will guide you through the lesser-known corners of the Nitra region.
